Salivary Cortisol Levels
Indication: Diagnose adrenal insufficiency and growth hormone deficiency.
Procedure:
- No food or fluids 30 minutes prior to the collection of all samples.
- Saliva samples can be collected either manually or with the use of a salivette.
- Obtain 9 serial saliva samples: 6AM, 7AM, 8AM, 2PM, 3PM, 4PM, 10PM, 11PM, MIDNIGHT. It is imperative that each sample has a sufficient amount of saliva for accurate interpretation.
- Ensure that all 9 collection containers (plastic vials) have the patientŐs name, date, time of collection and physican's name.
- Return samples to physician's office immediately after the test is complete.
- Saliva samples are then sent from the physician's office to the appropriate laboratory for analysis.
Interpretation: The administration of insulin should stimulate the adrenal glands to secrete cortisol and the pituitary gland to secrete growth hormone. Failure to respond appropriately to the insulin may suggest the need for hormone replacement.
